Model Insider Spotlight - Lumigraphics - MI 85

How did you get started in photography? What brought you to it?
I was in the Navy in San Diego and needed a hobby. 35mm SLRs were popular and a couple of months before I picked up my Canon AE-1 Program, Queen Elizabeth had visited our ship and I only had a cheap 110 camera to photograph her with. I decided I wanted a real camera. By the time I got out of the service, I was hooked on photography.

Do you consider yourself: Pro, Semi Pro, Hobbyist, Amateur, Something Else?
Part-time pro. I've been in business on and off for 25 years.

How did you find Model Insider and what do you like best about it?
James, one of the head honchos at MI, knew me from (cough cough) another modeling site and sent me an invitation.

What gear do you use?
I upgraded to a Sony A850. Full-frame, baby! Previously, mostly a Sony A700 with six lenses. I shot exclusively on Mamiya 645 for about nine years before i went to digital, and I sometimes still shoot landscapes on film.

What is your usual genre? Favorite genre?
Glamour and art nudes. I do a little alt and commercial stuff. Favorite is probably glamour/beauty.

How do you find models to work with?
Models ask me to shoot a lot, as well. Being active on social networking sites and word-of-mouth from people who know me is a big help.

Do you provide styling and makeup? Do you work with a preferred MUA?
I don't usually have styling, and makeup is nice but often the models do their own. I have worked with a number of good MUAs.

Where do you see yourself going in the next year, artistically and business wise?
I'm going to continue on the same path as the past year- shooting frequently, continuing to improve my work, and having fun. The biggest change is I have more resources to market myself than I did last year.

Do you shoot both in studio and on location, and do you have a preference?
Both and no real preference.

Do you have your own studio? If not, do you find this a limitation?
I shoot out of my house but I have had commercial studios in the past. And yes, I prefer having my own space; especially in winter it makes a big difference.

Do you travel?
I love to travel! I find it difficult to get away for long so my current stomping grounds would be the Upper Midwest- Michigan, Ohio, Indiana, Illinois.

Anything else you'd like to tell the Model Insiders about yourself?
All the years I was exclusivelty a landscape photographer, I never thought I would be interested in working with people. I'm glad that I changed my mind! My life has been very different and I think much happier and richer in the past 5+ years. I've made some wonderful friends and discovered a whole new world that I had been ignoring for way too long.
