Top Howard Schatz Videos

This is an interesting series of videos, and should give a great deal of insight to those that haven't experienced what it's like to be on set with an accomplished photographer. It will also give the anti spray and pray idiots something to fuss over.

-very interesting indeed.

-I like the way Mr Schatz works the motivation with the actor and then captures the subtle changes in each movement.

-The closing with the credits showing the varied emotions captured really drives the point home about catching things as they happen rather than hoping for one exact momentous shot.

-Thanks for sharing Bob.  As I get time I'm going to view several of the other videos on the Shatz - Orenstien site, very worth the view folks.

In a way, I'm jealous of his ability to bring accomplished actors into his studio for shoot sessions like that. But in a way, I feel sorry for him too, in that his results are highly fabricated by very accomplished actors, simply acting. On the one hand, it must be magical to watch people wander through such a wide range of stipulated emotions, but there is nothing like recording real, raw, live, actual emotion. You can't even imagine what it's like to have a former NFL football player crying in front of your camera, and deciding if it's wise to call him a crybaby faggot, just to see what comes next. While I enjoy Schatz' videos, and it's fun to watch the actors, there is a sense that it could have been taken further.

Interesting.  I  enjoy the story telling aspect, the coaching...the results are interesting and it's a great way to get an expression, or a specific one.  I've only seen a few people do that kind of a coaching, and I respect it greatly.  I can coach to an extent., but not nearly as well as others.

But you bring up a good point, Bob.  They are actors, so none of it seems genuine, which is kinda bothersome in a way.  I want to see people actually go to those not so happy places, and really feel them.  And maybe the actor in the video is doing that, perhaps that's his method of acting, but I don't know so I feel like he's just well trained instead of a real person actually feeling the emotions.

For the actor at the link supplied, I was left with the sensation that he wasn't committed to the process. He was more believable when he was explaining aspects of his real life as an actor, than he was when acting the parts... especially his effort when prompted about losing his fictional daughter.
