260 glass negatives were discovered in Washington, DC in 1893. They are now stored in the Library of Congress. This link Gardner, Alexander, 1821-1882 allows access for viewing and ordering prints. Some fascinating and historic images here - the quality of the images produced simply blows me away. A few samples

These are why I love history! Looking at the little things in the photos can tell you a great deal. Looking at the plate of
Lincoln and McClellan in McClellan's tent at Antietam, the Confederate battle flag on the ground, almost discarded, The Federal flag displayed prominently beside the president,(propaganda)
I can almost read Lincolns thoughts as he sits for the camera "McClellan,I gonna enjoy firing you".
and McClellan, "I cant attack Lee's army...I want to be president and cant suffer a defeat"
I'm also struck at how eerily that tent pole looks like the ones I erected during my active duty days (GP Large tents)
I love these windows on the past.
-those really are incredible.
-I'll have to spend some real time looking at the collection.

Detroit Publishing Co. took 8x10 glass plate negs of not only Detroit at the turn of the century but from sites all over the country.
I visit this site often to get blown away. Tack sharp, extreme detail, some scans are up over 4000 pixels on the long side of the image.

This one in particular was the Detroit PO in 1897. Click on the image for full size.
